What happens at an FOMC meeting

Over two days, the committee reviews the latest data on inflation, jobs, and growth, then votes on the target range for the federal funds rate — the benchmark that ripples out into almost every other interest rate in the economy. At 2:00 PM ET on the second day the Fed releases its policy statement announcing whether rates are raised, lowered, or held steady. Thirty minutes later the Fed Chair takes questions from reporters, and roughly three weeks after that the full meeting minutes are published.

Four times a year — at the March, June, September, and December meetings — the Fed also releases its Summary of Economic Projections, including the "dot plot" that shows where each policymaker expects rates to head.

What the Fed's decision means for your money

When the Fed raises rates, borrowing gets more expensive: mortgage rates, credit-card APRs, and personal-loan costs tend to climb, while savings accounts and CDs pay more. When it cuts, the reverse happens — cheaper loans, but lower returns on cash. When it holds, existing rates stay roughly where they are, and attention shifts to the Chair's tone for hints about the next move. Even before a decision lands, markets move on expectations, which is why the days around each meeting can be volatile.
